In a significant move to enhance the welfare of public sanitation workers, Kwara State Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq has introduced a health insurance scheme for all street sweepers in the state. The announcement was made by the state’s Deputy Governor, Kayode Alabi, during an interactive session with the sweepers in Ilorin on Saturday.
Alabi, represented by the Commissioner for Youth Development, Malam Shehu Ndanusa, emphasized the importance of maintaining the health and well-being of the sweepers to ensure they remain active and effective in their roles. The sweepers are set to be registered with the state health insurance officials and will receive registration/enrollment cards for use at state-owned hospitals.

Enhancing Worker Welfare
“Most of the sweepers are indigenes and have the opportunity to access the health insurance for free. All they need to do is to get registered. This is to encourage them to perform well in their work and make them know that their health is paramount to us,” stated the Deputy Governor.
The initiative aims to not only improve the health conditions of the sweepers but also to boost their morale and productivity. The state’s Commissioner for Environment, Hajiya Nafisat Buge, noted the importance of celebrating the hard work of these individuals who tirelessly maintain the cleanliness of the city.
Addressing Worker Concerns
The event provided a platform for the sweepers to voice their challenges. One of the sweepers, Abosede Amuda, expressed gratitude to the state government for the timely payment of their salaries, which they received before the Sallah celebration. However, Amuda highlighted that the current monthly wage of 15,000 Naira is insufficient, considering the rising costs of transportation and food. She appealed to the government for a salary increase to help them cope with the economic challenges.
“We plead with the government to increase our salary by considering the hike in transportation fare and increase in prices of foodstuffs in the market,” she said.
Additionally, the sweepers requested the deployment of more environmental task force officials to enforce proper waste disposal, as some residents continue to dispose of refuse irresponsibly.
Recognition and Rewards
To honor their diligent service, 25 sweepers were awarded a sum of 5,000 Naira each, along with a large food warmer. All sweepers present at the event were also provided with transportation fare to return home.
This initiative by Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq signifies a commendable step towards acknowledging and supporting the crucial work done by street sweepers, ensuring their health, and addressing their concerns for better working conditions.
