The Labour Party’s National Leadership has stood unwavering on the issue of the N30 million fee for nomination and expression of interest forms for aspiring candidates in the upcoming Edo State governorship election. Addressing concerns raised by one of the aspirants, Egbe Omorodion, who appealed for a review of the fee, the party emphasized the seriousness of the election process.
In an interview with The PUNCH, LP National Publicity Secretary, Obiora Ifoh, underscored the significance of the N30 million fee as a demonstration of aspirants’ commitment to the electoral process. Ifoh argued that the fee reflects the financial capability required for aspirants to navigate the main election, which could entail expenditures in the hundreds of millions.

Omorodion, who also serves as the LP Chairman in the United Kingdom, acknowledged the call for a fee reduction but clarified that their intent was not to compel the party. Instead, they seek to ensure inclusivity in the political process. Drawing a comparison to the Imo State election, where forms were priced at N15 million each, Omorodion expressed concerns about the increasing monetization of politics.
Despite internal controversies surrounding allegations of the party being influenced by affluent individuals, LP Chairman Kelly Ogbaloi reassured all aspirants of a level playing field. With 34 contenders currently vying for the party’s ticket in the February primaries, Ogbaloi dismissed claims of the party favoring moneyed interests.

Omorodion, in highlighting the need for a balance between conscience and the form’s price, emphasized the importance of allowing more individuals to actively participate in the political process. The aspirants argued that if excluded due to high costs, genuine voices advocating for change may be stifled, impacting the democratic essence of the electoral system.
Ifoh concluded by urging aspirants to comprehend the party’s position and stressed the necessity of selecting quality candidates capable of winning the Edo State governorship election. The party remains resolute in its decision, refusing to reverse the fees for expression of interest and nomination forms, signaling a commitment to a competitive and serious electoral process.
