The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has laid out seven demands to the Federal Government ahead of the upcoming Workers’ Day celebration on May 1, 2024.
Among the key demands put forth by the NLC is the call for the creation of state and local government police forces to address the prevalent insecurity issues across the nation. Additionally, the congress emphasized the necessity for the implementation of a new minimum wage, stressing that both states, local governments, and the private sector must comply once the new wage is approved.

The anticipation surrounding this year’s Workers’ Day celebration is heightened, as there are expectations that President Bola Tinubu may unveil the proposed new minimum wage for workers during the event. It is reported that the NLC had tentatively pegged the new minimum wage at N615,000 per month.
The expiration of the current N30,000 minimum wage, which was signed into law by former President Muhammadu Buhari in 2019, has further fueled discussions and negotiations between the government and labour unions. The tripartite committee, established to negotiate a new minimum wage, has been tasked with recommending a fair and sustainable wage structure for the country.
