In a decisive move to uphold safety standards across Lagos State, the Lagos State Government has sealed over 10 buildings in the Ejigbo area for failing to meet stringent building codes. This action underscores the administration’s commitment to protecting lives and properties, and deterring developers from engaging in unsafe construction practices.
According to Oki, a senior official from the Lagos State Ministry of Physical Planning and Urban Development, the sealed buildings were found to be non-compliant with the state’s rigorous safety standards. “We are taking these measures to ensure that buildings across Lagos are safe and can withstand environmental pressures, thereby preventing avoidable disasters,” Oki stated during a press briefing. The crackdown follows a recent inspection by the state’s regulatory agencies, revealing widespread disregard for established building codes among developers in Ejigbo.

The Lagos State Government has reiterated its commitment to stringent monitoring and supervision of all building projects within the state. “We are not just sealing buildings, but also educating developers and property owners on the importance of adhering to safety standards,” Oki emphasized. The government’s move is seen as a deterrent to other developers who may be contemplating similar violations. Oki warned that those found in violation would face the full wrath of the law, highlighting the importance of compliance to prevent tragic consequences.
The sealing of these buildings aligns with the Lagos State Government’s broader strategy to create safer living environments through improved urban planning and infrastructure development. “We are not only sealing buildings; we are fostering a culture of compliance and accountability among developers to ensure the safety of all residents,” Oki said. The state’s regulatory framework includes regular inspections, safety audits, and stringent penalties for non-compliance, aimed at promoting a safer built environment for all Lagosians.
To provide residents with peace of mind, the government is also enhancing its public communication efforts. “We want residents to know that their safety is our top priority,” Oki concluded. “Through continued monitoring and engagement, we are committed to ensuring that every building in Lagos meets the highest safety standards.”
