Operatives of the Zone 2 Police Command, Onikan, Lagos, have rejected a ₦174 million bribe offered by Patrick Akpoguma, a 28-year-old suspected internet fraudster. Akpoguma, accused of various cybercrimes, admitted to offering the bribe in a bid to secure his release after being apprehended for his fraudulent activities.
The investigation into Akpoguma’s activities began on November 7, 2024, following reports from residents of Chevron Drive, Lekki, where he resides. According to Assistant Inspector General (AIG) Adegoke Fayoade, Akpoguma had been impersonating high-profile individuals online to defraud unsuspecting victims. He created a fake Instagram account under the name Adam Taggart, a well-known cryptocurrency expert, and even purchased a silicone mask for $11,200 to enhance his deception.

Akpoguma confessed to using these fake identities to carry out romance and cryptocurrency scams. He convinced his victims, often presenting himself as a U.S. Army officer or a top financial executive, to send him money under the guise of loans for various projects. Over seven victims fell prey to his schemes, transferring funds through Bitcoin Trust Wallet and other blockchain transactions.
During the investigation, Akpoguma offered a $100,000 bribe, equivalent to about ₦174 million, to the police. Following AIG Fayoade’s directive, the detectives, led by CSP Ngozi Braid, pretended to accept the bribe to gather evidence. The money was recorded and added to the case file, and Akpoguma remained in custody.
In his confession, Akpoguma revealed his motivation for engaging in fraud, citing a disdain for regular employment. A graduate of Mechanical Engineering, he stated that he considered himself too intelligent to work for a salary. Over the past three years, he claimed to have earned more than $500,000 from his fraudulent activities, acquiring properties in Lagos and Edo State, as well as a GLE Benz valued at ₦100 million.
Despite his criminal endeavors, Akpoguma insisted he never left his victims completely penniless. He stated that once he had taken what he deemed sufficient, he would cut ties and leave them with some funds.
The police have concluded their investigation, and Akpoguma is set to face prosecution. The Lagos police’s decision to reject the bribe highlights their commitment to upholding justice and integrity.
