Lagos State Pushes for Sustainable Mining to Avoid Environmental Hazards

The Lagos State Government is taking a strong stance on ensuring responsible mining practices, aiming to reduce the environmental hazards that often result from unregulated operations. At a recent forum, officials from the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources called on stakeholders to minimize the pollution caused by sand spillage on roads, as well as other mining-related activities that could harm the ecosystem.

Okanlawon Olowu, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Mineral Resources, emphasized the essential role that minerals play in Lagos’ development. However, he cautioned that this growth must not come at the expense of the environment. Mining activities, though necessary for urban infrastructure, often contribute to environmental degradation if not managed responsibly. By adhering to regulatory standards, Olowu stressed, the industry can strike a balance between economic advancement and ecological sustainability.

The forum also focused on the need to enforce laws governing the mining sector, ensuring that operators comply with the regulations set forth by the government. The Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Abiola Kosegbe, reiterated that promoting sustainable mining practices would mitigate environmental risks, benefiting both the industry and local communities. She urged all participants to support the government’s initiatives in safeguarding the state’s critical assets, including its natural resources.

Stakeholders were reminded to collaborate with the government in order to ensure the long-term sustainability of Lagos’ mining sector.
