TAIPEI, May 20, 2024 – In a landmark inauguration speech, Taiwan’s new President Lai Ching-te pledged to protect the island’s democratic values and urged China to halt its military intimidation. Lai emphasized the need for Taiwan to bolster its defense capabilities amidst growing pressures from Beijing.
Lai, 64, lauded the resilience of Taiwanese citizens in defending democracy and highlighted the island’s steadfast commitment to maintaining its sovereignty without declaring formal independence. He called on China to engage in dialogue rather than confrontation, promoting peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait.

Despite Beijing’s labeling of Lai as a “dangerous separatist,” he has softened his rhetoric on independence, advocating for the status quo. Lai also aims to strengthen defense ties with the United States, Taiwan’s primary partner and arms supplier.
U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken congratulated Lai, expressing hopes for deepened Washington-Taipei relations. Lai’s tenure will focus on enhancing national security and fostering international partnerships.
As tensions continue, Lai’s administration faces domestic challenges, including economic concerns and a lack of legislative majority following the Democratic Progressive Party’s loss in recent elections.
