Despite Beijing’s labeling of Lai as a “dangerous separatist,” he has softened his rhetoric on independence, advocating for the status quo. Lai also aims to strengthen defense ties with the United States, Taiwan’s primary partner and arms supplier.
U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken congratulated Lai, expressing hopes for deepened Washington-Taipei relations. Lai’s tenure will focus on enhancing national security and fostering international partnerships.
As tensions continue, Lai’s administration faces domestic challenges, including economic concerns and a lack of legislative majority following the Democratic Progressive Party’s loss in recent elections.
