Barcelona, Spain – Lamine Yamal, the 16-year-old forward from Barcelona, is set to make history as the youngest player ever to participate in the European Championship. Spain’s coach Luis de la Fuente has confirmed Yamal’s inclusion in the starting lineup for their opening match against Croatia on Saturday.
Yamal will surpass Kacper Kozlowski of Poland, who held the previous record at Euro 2020 when he played at 17 years and 246 days old. Moreover, if Yamal scores during the tournament in Germany, he will break yet another record as the youngest goalscorer at the Euros, currently held by Johan Vonlanthen for Switzerland since 2004.

Having debuted with Barcelona at just 15 years old, Yamal has quickly risen through the ranks, showcasing impressive talent and skill. He made history last year as Spain’s youngest-ever international player and goalscorer during Euro 2024 qualifying against Georgia.
Reflecting on Yamal’s meteoric rise, veteran Croatian captain Luka Modric commented on the youngster’s potential impact, acknowledging him as a formidable threat on the field.
Yamal’s selection underscores Spain’s commitment to nurturing young talent and injecting fresh vigor into their squad for the European Championship. Football enthusiasts eagerly anticipate witnessing Yamal’s debut and the potential milestones he may achieve during the tournament.
