Latest News On Gas Price Update 6th March 2024

The recent surge in demand for Liquified Petroleum Gas (LPG), commonly known as cooking gas, in Lagos has caused a significant disruption in the market. Despite the Nigeria Liquified Natural Gas (NLNG) Limited confirming a substantial supply of 1.5 million metric tons, many users faced challenges in securing the commodity. As of Friday, March 1, the price of LPG skyrocketed to N1,300 per kilogram, creating a scenario where consumers had to contend with long queues and limited availability.

NLNG’s Commitment and Production

NLNG, a major player in the LPG sector, has been a steadfast supplier to the Nigerian domestic market. The company’s commitment to delivering 100 percent of its LPG production to the local market, as decided by the board of Directors in 2022, has been a driving force behind its efforts. In 2023 alone, NLNG supplied 493,000 metric tons of LPG, emphasizing its dedication to meeting market demands.

Supply Challenges and Escalating Prices

Despite NLNG’s continuous efforts, the recent situation saw most outlets in Lagos running out of supply, leading to long queues at refilling plants. Even NNPCL retail outlets were dry, exacerbating the shortage. Some marketers, like TotalEnergies, were selling LPG at an alarming rate of N1,300 per 1kg, catching consumers off guard and forcing them to buy limited quantities due to the unexpected price hike.

NLNG’s Role in Gas Utilization

NLNG, aware of the challenges, advocates increased consumer awareness, especially in rural areas, regarding the use of LPG for cooking. The company maintains its commitment to supply close to 500,000 metric tons annually to meet market demands. In 2022, NLNG delivered 498,000 metric tons, and in 2021, it supplied 399,000 metric tons, covering 30 percent of the total LPG demand in Nigeria, estimated at 1.5 million metric tons.

NLNG’s Initiatives for Market Growth

NLNG actively promotes increased gas utilization within the country, aiming to alter the current energy mix and achieve a deeper penetration of LPG. The company’s general manager, Finance, Mrs. Fatima Adanan, stressed the need for a campaign transitioning biomass users to LPG for cooking. NLNG’s efforts in facilitating more stakeholders into the LPG value chain have contributed to additional employment and business opportunities in Nigeria.

Conclusion

In conclusion, the recent challenges in the LPG market in Lagos highlight the importance of sustainable energy sources. NLNG’s dedication to meeting market demands and promoting cleaner energy solutions demonstrates a commitment to the well-being of consumers and the environment. As we navigate these challenges, collaboration between stakeholders and increased consumer awareness becomes paramount for a resilient and efficient LPG sector.
