Like JAMB, WAEC Prepares to Introduce Computer-Based Testing (CBT) Mode for Examinations

In a recent interview with the News Agency of Nigeria, the Head of National Office of the West African Examinations Council (WAEC), Mr. Patrick Areghan, disclosed that plans to introduce the Computer-Based Test (CBT) mode in the administration of its examinations are in advanced stages. This significant development comes as Mr. Areghan prepares to conclude his three-year tenure as the WAEC boss on October 1.

The move towards adopting CBT for WAEC examinations is part of Mr. Areghan’s vision for the organization, aiming to modernize and enhance the efficiency of the examination process. However, he acknowledged that implementing CBT for practicals and essay papers poses unique challenges that require careful consideration.

One notable advantage of the CBT approach, as highlighted by Mr. Areghan, is the enhanced security and accessibility of certificates. With CBT, candidates can easily retrieve their certificates, even in cases of loss, damage, or destruction, by simply providing the necessary credentials.

Another significant achievement during Mr. Areghan’s tenure is the establishment of the council’s Digital Security Printing Press. This innovation marks a milestone in the council’s 71-year history, further ensuring the security and authenticity of examination materials.

In addition to these technological advancements, Mr. Areghan’s tenure also saw the implementation of the Staff Bus scheme, aimed at mitigating the impact of high transportation fares resulting from the fuel subsidy removal. He expressed his hope that his successor would continue to motivate the staff and build on these achievements.

When reflecting on his greatest achievement as the WAEC head, Mr. Areghan emphasized the successful conduct of examinations, timely release of results, and the efficient printing and issuance of certificates to deserving candidates. He expressed gratitude for being able to carry out these critical functions even during the challenging COVID-19 years from 2020 to 2023.

In conclusion, the West African Examinations Council, under the leadership of Mr. Patrick Areghan, is poised to embrace the Computer-Based Test mode for its examinations, aligning with global trends in educational assessment. This move promises enhanced security, accessibility, and efficiency in the examination process, marking a significant step forward for WAEC.
