Liverpool FC Reports £9 Million Loss in 2022/23 Season

In a surprising financial turn, Liverpool Football Club has announced a pre-tax loss of £9 million ($11.4 million) for the 2022/23 season. The revelation comes despite their recent triumph in the League Cup under the management of Jurgen Klopp, who is concluding his tenure at Anfield this season.

The club’s overall revenue, stagnant at £594 million, failed to rise after a disappointing campaign that saw Liverpool finish fifth in the Premier League and make early exits from both domestic cups and the Champions League.

While commercial income increased, it couldn’t compensate for the drop in media and matchday revenues. Media revenue decreased by £19 million to £242 million, and matchday revenue suffered due to fewer games played compared to the previous season.

Liverpool’s wage bill for the season rose by £7 million to £373 million, and administrative costs climbed by £17 million to £562 million. The club had experienced a small profit of £7.5 million in the preceding 12 months.

The significant increase in off-field income, totaling £272 million, was a highlight for the club. However, a last-16 exit from the Champions League contributed to the drop in media revenue.

Managing director Andy Hughes emphasized the strength of Liverpool’s financial position despite growing football costs. He stated, “the success of our commercial operations demonstrates the strength of our underlying financial position so we can continue to operate sustainably while competing at the highest levels of football.”

Matchday revenue is expected to see an uptick following the full opening of the new Anfield Road stand in February, increasing Anfield’s capacity to 61,000.

During the reporting period, Liverpool made strategic player acquisitions, signing Darwin Nunez, Cody Gakpo, Calvin Ramsay, and youth team goalkeeper Kornel Misciur for a combined initial fee of £105 million. Key players like Mohamed Salah saw contract renewals, with Salah becoming the highest earner in the club’s history on a reported deal of £300,000 per week.

Despite the financial setbacks, Liverpool remains a force on the field. They recently secured the League Cup under Klopp’s management, are leading the Premier League, and continue their journey in the FA Cup and the Europa League.
