Malawi's Temwa Beats Ronaldo, Messi, and Mbappé, Emerges as the World's Top Scorer in 2023

Temwa Chawinga of Malawi has made history by finishing 2023 as the leading female goalscorer worldwide, as declared by the International Federation of Football History & Statistics (IFFHS). This achievement marks her as the first non-European player to clinch the title. At 25 years old, she follows in the footsteps of previous winners Jenni Hermoso of Spain (2021) and Fenna Kalma of the Netherlands (2022), becoming only the third recipient of the IFFHS award for women.

Chawinga’s remarkable tally of 63 goals in all competitions surpasses the goal-scoring achievements of any male player in 2023. She outpaced Cristiano Ronaldo, the leading male goalscorer, by nine goals. Ronaldo finished the year with a total of 54 goals for club and country, moving ahead of other prominent players like Harry Kane and Kylian Mbappé.

Playing for the Chinese club Wuhan Jianghan, Chawinga netted an impressive 51 goals in 2023, making her the top scorer for any club side globally. Additionally, she contributed 12 goals to the Malawi national team, securing a comfortable lead over the second-placed woman on the list, Verónica Charlyn Corral of Pachuca in Mexico.

Breaking down her achievements, Chawinga scored 30 goals in the Chinese Women’s Super League, 15 in the Chinese National Cup, and 6 in the Chinese Women’s FA Cup. Even excluding the 21 goals in Cup competitions, she would have still topped the list of female goalscorers for the calendar year.

Chawinga’s older sister, Tabitha, who also plays as a striker for Wuhan Jianghan, made her own mark by becoming the first player from Malawi, regardless of gender, to play and score in the UEFA Champions League. In contrast, Temwa Chawinga helped Malawi secure their first-ever COSAFA Cup, a Southern African national team competition, despite the team not receiving any prize money due to the financial disparities between men’s and women’s football.

Although Temwa did not score in the COSAFA Cup final, a 2-1 victory over Zambia in Pretoria, she earned the Golden Boot as the top scorer with nine goals and the Golden Ball as the player of the tournament, receiving just over $1000 in prize money. Notably, Chelsea’s Sam Kerr, a European-based goalscorer, finished among the top five for the third consecutive year, contributing 37 goals across all competitions in 2023.
