
In a disturbing incident that took place on October 22, 2024, a resident of Kano State, Nasiru Mukhtar, has been remanded in custody by a Sharia Court at Kofar Kudu following allegations of assault against Imam Malam Murtala Sulaiman. The incident reportedly occurred during morning prayers at a mosque located in the Tudunwada area.
Witnesses claim that Mukhtar entered the mosque and aggressively confronted the imam, grabbing him by the neck, slapping him, and tearing his clothes. The accused allegedly seized the imam’s microphone during the attack, causing further disruption during the prayers. The imam subsequently reported the incident to the Kano State police command, which led to Mukhtar’s arrest.

During the court proceedings, Mukhtar’s defense attorney requested bail, highlighting the necessity for additional investigation into the matter. However, presiding Judge Malam Isah Rabi’u Gaya ordered a psychiatric evaluation to determine the mental health of the accused before any decisions regarding bail could be made.
The court has scheduled the next hearing for November 22, 2024, while Mukhtar remains in custody as the legal proceedings continue. This incident has raised concerns within the community about the safety and sanctity of religious spaces.
