Manchester United has officially confirmed that Brazilian winger Antony will be resuming training despite the ongoing allegations of domestic abuse surrounding him. The decision comes after Antony voluntarily cooperated with Greater Manchester Police, and no restrictions were placed on him following the interview. The 23-year-old has consistently denied the allegations and has provided evidence in support of his claims.
As of now, Antony has not faced any arrests or charges in either Brazil or the UK. Manchester United released a statement addressing the situation, indicating that they will keep a close eye on developments as police inquiries continue.
During a recent news conference, Manchester United’s manager, Erik ten Hag, acknowledged that he had spoken with Antony. However, ten Hag emphasized that it is challenging to gauge Antony’s mental state based solely on their conversation. He also made it clear that Antony’s return to training will not be a distraction for the team.
Antony had been on leave with full pay from Manchester United, missing four games, to address allegations made by three different women, including his former partner Gabriela Cavallin. These allegations came to light when Brazilian news outlet UOL published Cavallin’s account on September 4. She accused Antony of a headbutt attack in a Manchester hotel room in January, resulting in a cut on her head that required medical attention. Additionally, she alleged being punched in the chest, causing damage to a silicone breast implant, which subsequently needed corrective surgery.
Two more allegations followed, with Rayssa de Freitas and Ingrid Lana both claiming Antony assaulted them in 2022—a claim Antony vehemently denies. Lana, a 33-year-old banker, described an incident where she claimed to have hit her head when pushed against a wall at Antony’s house in Manchester in October of the previous year.
Throughout this tumultuous period, Antony has consistently cooperated with authorities in both Brazil and the UK, and Manchester United has issued a strong statement condemning all acts of violence and abuse. The club also acknowledged the importance of safeguarding everyone involved in this situation and recognized the impact that such allegations have on survivors of abuse.
The situation surrounding Antony’s return to training remains dynamic, with further developments expected as police investigations continue.
