Meet Gabriel Eze: The FUTO Graduate Who Chose Plumbing Despite Securing a First-Class in Petroleum Engineering

In a remarkable tale of determination and unconventional career choices, Gabriel Eze, a Federal University of Technology Owerri (FUTO) graduate, has defied expectations by bagging a first-class honours degree in Petroleum Engineering despite his roots in plumbing.

Eze’s journey began in secondary school when financial constraints led him to explore plumbing as a vocation at the age of 14. His interest deepened during an apprenticeship, lasting over four years, where he honed his plumbing skills. The young entrepreneur founded his plumbing enterprise, registering it in 2020.

However, his academic pursuits in Petroleum Engineering were not an afterthought. Motivated by a childhood interest in mathematics and an awareness of Nigeria’s reliance on petroleum, Eze pursued a degree in Petroleum Engineering. Interestingly, his background as a plumber influenced his choice, as the fluid dynamics involved in plumbing connected seamlessly with his chosen field of study.

Despite facing financial challenges during his academic journey, Eze remained resilient. He self-sponsored his education, securing scholarships like the Petroleum Technology Development Fund undergraduate scholarship, Agbami Medical and Engineering Professionals’ Scholarship, and others, which played a crucial role in easing his financial burden.

Eze’s motivation stemmed from his late father’s belief in his intelligence and the guidance of several mentors during his academic journey. His mother, a civil servant, played a pivotal role in supporting him and his siblings after their father’s passing.

Remarkably, Eze graduated with a cumulative grade point average of 4.65, attaining first-class honours. His academic achievements have garnered widespread recognition, with stories of his success circulating on various platforms and social media.

Looking ahead, Eze plans to further his education, potentially pursuing a PhD or master’s degree outside Nigeria. He also intends to participate in the National Youth Service Corps programme while exploring collaborations with established organizations.

Despite his academic success, Eze remains grounded, emphasizing that he will always be a plumber. He highlights that success is not limited to academic achievements, and individuals can thrive in any field with focus, diligence, and determination.
