Former Chelsea midfielder, John Mikel Obi, has praised Ademola Lookman for choosing to represent Nigeria over England.
Lookman, 26, was born in England to Nigerian parents and had previously represented England’s youth teams, including their 2017 FIFA U-20 World Cup-winning squad. However, he successfully switched allegiance to Nigeria in 2022.
Mikel Obi believes Lookman made the right decision at the right time. Speaking on BeIN Sports, he emphasized the importance of players making timely choices about their international representation.
“Players have to wait for a while before they decide they want to represent their African root. I genuinely think it shouldn’t be that way,” Mikel said.

If you are 20-year-old, make your decision, don’t wait until you are 26, 28. Don’t wait until you are past your best and we become a second option.”
Mikel praised Lookman’s impact on the Super Eagles, citing his impressive performances and goal-scoring ability.
“I think Ademola Lookman made the right decision to switch quickly to represent Nigeria, and he’s done really well. He played well last season and he’s such a fantastic player.”
Lookman has become a key player for Nigeria, helping the team in various competitions. His decision to represent Nigeria has paid off, and he’s now a strong contender for the CAF African Player of the Year award.
Mikel’s comments highlight the need for players to make deliberate choices about their international careers, rather than viewing African nations as secondary options.
