Tinubu’s Commitment to Power Equity

Minister Adebayo Adelabu emphasized that President Tinubu’s administration is dedicated to a fair and inclusive approach, with no intention to marginalize any region regarding power distribution. This statement came amidst concerns following a power outage that affected northern states. Adelabu addressed the situation on October 31, 2024, during his meeting with officials from the Kano State government, underscoring the administration’s commitment to collaboration for a sustainable power supply across Nigeria.

“The recent outage was unfortunate and unintended,” Adelabu stated, stressing the need for a permanent solution to prevent such occurrences in the future.

Focus on Collaborative Power Solutions

Adelabu’s working visit to Kano centered on inspecting existing installations and seeking collaborative strategies with the Kano State government. He highlighted opportunities for states to participate in power generation and distribution, citing the federal government’s recent decentralization of the power sector, which grants authority to 10 states to generate power.

“We are here to encourage Kano and other states to join us in investing in power generation and distribution. Many ongoing projects, if left unaddressed, could lead to significant economic losses,” Adelabu remarked.

The minister’s appeal aligns with the Tinubu administration’s drive to empower states with the autonomy to generate power and enhance overall infrastructure.

Kano State’s Response and Plans for Investment

Representing Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, Chief of Staff Shehu Sagagi responded positively, expressing the state government’s readiness to engage in collaborative power initiatives. Sagagi pledged that Kano would explore power sector investment opportunities and integrate such efforts into future budgets.

This collaborative outlook highlights a growing momentum within Nigeria’s power sector, as states are given the mandate to address local power needs independently, furthering Tinubu’s vision of a decentralized and efficient energy landscape.

Challenges and the Way Forward

The power sector remains one of Nigeria’s most challenging areas, with recurrent outages affecting both northern and southern regions. Adelabu’s reassurance and the federal government’s new policies provide a pathway toward more sustainable and resilient energy solutions. By decentralizing power generation, the government aims to encourage states to take a proactive role, thus reducing regional disparities in power supply.

With the groundwork laid by Tinubu’s administration, stakeholders in both federal and state governments are expected to take decisive steps to fulfill this vision, ensuring that energy needs are met across all Nigerian regions.
