MLS Cup: Messi Falls as Atlanta United Eliminate Inter Miami

Lionel Messi’s quest for an MLS Cup title ended in heartbreak as Inter Miami suffered a stunning 3-2 defeat to Atlanta United in the first round of the playoffs on Saturday. Despite a record-breaking regular season and clinching the Supporters’ Shield, Miami fell short in the postseason, losing the best-of-three series 2-0.

Inter Miami appeared poised for success when Matias Rojas opened the scoring in the 17th minute, capitalizing on a save by Atlanta’s veteran goalkeeper Brad Guzan. However, Atlanta quickly struck back, with Jamal Thiare netting twice in rapid succession, flipping the script on the heavily favored Miami side.

Although Diego Gomez’s goal was disallowed for offside and Messi equalized in the 65th minute with a powerful header, Miami’s efforts to regain control were stifled. A decisive header from Bartosz Slisz sealed the win for Atlanta, leaving Miami players and fans in disbelief as their title hopes crumbled.

Inter head coach Gerardo Martino, who once led Atlanta to MLS Cup glory in 2018, acknowledged the disappointment but emphasized the club’s progress over the past year. Meanwhile, former Barcelona teammates Jordi Alba and Sergio Busquets, who were instrumental during the regular season, lamented the playoff format, calling for changes to the league’s structure.

As Atlanta advances to face Orlando in the Eastern Conference semi-finals, Miami is left to reflect on a promising season that fell short of its ultimate goal.
