The Sokoto State government has clarified its recent expenditure of N1.2 billion on water projects, stating that the funds were spent on drilling new solar-powered boreholes rather than renovating existing ones. This clarification follows widespread reports claiming that the state government had used the funds to refurbish old boreholes in Wurno Local Government Area.
The Chief Press Secretary to the governor, Abubakar Bawa, issued a statement on Thursday, dismissing the claims as false and describing them as part of a deliberate attempt to spread misinformation. He emphasized that the N1.2 billion was used for the construction of 25 new boreholes in several communities, including Munki, Marnona, Dinawa, Lugu, and Wurno. These projects were carried out in collaboration with the World Bank under the Agro-Climatic Resilience in Semi-Arid Landscapes (ACReSAL) program.
Bawa explained that contrary to reports suggesting that the money was spent on renovations, the areas in question had never previously had boreholes. The projects initiated by the current administration are new developments aimed at addressing long-standing water shortages in these communities. Bawa made it clear that it would be impossible to renovate boreholes that had never existed.

This issue had a significant impact on daily life, particularly affecting children, who were often required to fetch water for their families, thereby missing out on educational opportunities. Bawa added that the decision to construct the boreholes was made to improve the lives of the people in rural areas who have suffered from the lack of basic infrastructure. He emphasized that the Ahmed Aliyu administration is committed to delivering projects that directly benefit the citizens of Sokoto State, and the collaboration with the World Bank demonstrates a focus on sustainable solutions.
The Chief Press Secretary concluded by urging the public to disregard the false reports circulating on social media, calling them an attempt by “enemies of progress” to undermine the government’s efforts. He assured residents that the current administration is focused on improving access to essential services like water, which will contribute to better living conditions for rural communities.
This clarification sets the record straight on the government’s spending and highlights its commitment to providing much-needed infrastructure in underserved areas. Through strategic partnerships and a focus on sustainability, the Sokoto State government continues to prioritize the well-being of its citizens.
