N52.9 Million Fraud: Court Grants EFCC Approval to Freeze 67 Bank Accounts Across Multiple Banks

The Federal High Court in Abuja has granted the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) permission to freeze 67 bank accounts linked to an alleged fraud case involving ₦52.9 million. Justice Emeka Nwite approved the ex-parte application filed by EFCC counsel, Martha Babatunde, to halt transactions on these accounts pending further investigations.

The motion, marked FHC/ABJ/CS/1895/V/2024, was presented by Miracle Anameze. It requested that EFCC Chairman Ola Plucked or authorized officers instruct the managing directors of the affected banks to freeze the accounts.

Key Findings from the Investigation

According to the EFCC, the accounts are suspected of holding proceeds of crime. The investigation stems from a criminal petition filed on October 17, 2023, by a company, ADSEL, represented by Nnamdi Michael Ogobuchi and Mr. Dollah Kingsley Nnamdi. The petition accused Taiwo Abubakar Oluwajuwon and Heasy Enterprises of internet fraud, conspiracy, and unauthorized withdrawals totaling ₦52,991,000.

The investigation revealed that ₦50 million was withdrawn from ADSEL’s account at VFD Microfinance Bank and transferred to Heasy Enterprises’ account at Moniepoint Microfinance Bank. The funds were then distributed across several accounts, as detailed in EFCC’s findings.

Court Ruling and Next Steps

Justice Nwite deemed the application meritorious and approved the freezing of the accounts for 90 days to allow a thorough investigation. The judge adjourned the case to March 24, 2025, for mention.

An EFCC investigator, Ikenna Chukwueze, noted that further analysis revealed multiple linked accounts under the suspects’ BVNs. The 67 accounts span various financial institutions, including Union Bank, Stanbic Bank, GTBank, Zenith Bank, Wema Bank, Access Bank, and others.

The EFCC emphasized that the freeze order is necessary to prevent the dissipation of funds while investigations are ongoing.
