NAFDAC bans importation of Indomie Noodles in Nigeria

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has banned the importation of Indomie noodles into Nigeria due to safety concerns. According to NAFDAC Director-General, Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, Indomie noodles are on the government’s prohibition list, and only Indomie noodles produced in Nigeria are approved for circulation in the country.

This comes after Taiwan and Malaysia authorities recalled Indomie noodles due to the presence of ethylene oxide, a toxic compound that can cause cancer, in the seasoning. In response, NAFDAC has launched an investigation to ensure that the recalled products are not being sold in Nigeria.

NAFDAC’s Food Safety and Applied Nutrition Directorate and Post Marketing Surveillance Directorate will conduct random sampling of Indomie noodles, including the seasoning, from production facilities and markets. The agency’s Food Lab Services Directorate will analyze the samples for the presence of ethylene oxide. The investigation will also include testing of the spices used in Indomie and other noodles produced in Nigeria.

Adeyeye emphasized that the investigation is a precautionary measure to protect the health and safety of Nigerians. She also encouraged Nigerians to be vigilant and report any suspicious products to NAFDAC.

The ban on the importation of Indomie noodles underscores NAFDAC’s commitment to ensuring that only safe and healthy food products are available to Nigerians. NAFDAC has been active in regulating the food and drug industry in Nigeria, and this ban is in line with its mandate to protect public health.
