NAFDAC Clarifies Organs Prohibited on Product Packaging

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has clarified its position on the use of body organ imagery on product labels and packaging. The agency firmly stated that body organs, such as lungs, hearts, or other internal structures, are strictly prohibited on the artwork of any registered product.

This announcement follows a viral social media video claiming that NAFDAC had approved a herbal tea marketed to reverse the effects of smoking. NAFDAC has categorically denied these claims, describing them as false and unsubstantiated.

Prohibited Use of Body Organ Imagery

NAFDAC’s regulations clearly forbid the depiction of body organs on product artwork. According to the agency, such visuals can mislead consumers and create false impressions about the product’s effectiveness or therapeutic benefits.

“The health of Nigerians is our top priority, and we will not tolerate any form of misinformation or deceptive practices,” a NAFDAC representative stated.

The Viral Controversy

The product in question, labeled as Lung Detox Tea or Lungitox (Smokers Pride), was alleged to reverse smoking-related damage. However, NAFDAC confirmed that the product is not registered and never received approval. The application for the product was queried by the agency in 2023 due to unsubstantiated claims and improper labeling.

Stricter Enforcement of Regulations

NAFDAC has emphasized that any product submitted for approval must comply with its strict regulatory standards. The agency has also warned that using fake NAFDAC registration numbers on products is a criminal offense that will be met with severe legal consequences.

Consumer Safety Comes First

Consumers are urged to remain cautious and report any suspicious products. NAFDAC has reiterated its commitment to protecting public health by ensuring only safe, effective, and properly vetted products are allowed in the market.
