NANS Urges Increase in Student Loans to N40,000 Due to Fuel Price Hike

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has called on the Federal Government to increase student loans from N20,000 to N40,000, following the recent rise in fuel prices. This request was made by NANS Senate President Babatunde Akinteye during a press conference held in Abuja, where he emphasized the growing financial strain on students across the country.

Akinteye highlighted that the surge in fuel prices has caused a significant increase in living costs, particularly for students who are already struggling with the financial demands of higher education. He stressed that raising the loan amount is essential to help students manage their daily expenses and continue their education without facing financial hardship.

In addition to calling for an increase in student loans, Akinteye urged the government to control its spending and demonstrate fiscal responsibility during these challenging times. He noted that government officials must set an example by making sacrifices, as the nation grapples with the economic consequences of rising fuel prices and other financial challenges.

Akinteye also appealed for patience and unity among students, urging them to remain calm as the government implements its economic reforms. He acknowledged that while the reforms, particularly those introduced by President Bola Tinubu, are difficult, they are aimed at addressing long-standing issues in the Nigerian economy. Akinteye expressed confidence that the policies will yield positive results in the long term, even though they are causing short-term discomfort.

The NANS Senate President further addressed the broader economic issues affecting students and the general public, including foreign exchange instability and fuel scarcity. Akinteye urged the government to take deliberate actions to tackle these problems head-on, especially since the economic strain is hitting lower-income groups the hardest.

He reiterated NANS’ commitment to ensuring the safety of Nigerian students and emphasized that the association would work to protect students from any risks associated with protests or other forms of agitation.
