In a coordinated effort, the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) and the Department of State Services (DSS) have successfully rescued 19 children trafficked from Kebbi State. The children, aged between 3 and 6 years, were found in Calabar, Cross River State, after being transported by human traffickers.
The operation followed a tip-off that led NAPTIP officials to intercept a group of children being moved in batches from Kebbi to Calabar. According to Governor Nasiru Idris of Kebbi State, who addressed the press at the Government House in Birnin Kebbi, one of the traffickers apprehended during the operation revealed that some of the children had already been moved to Calabar.
Further investigation allowed the authorities to rescue the remaining children and arrest three suspects involved in the trafficking ring. Governor Idris expressed deep concern over the incident, emphasizing the traumatic experiences the children had endured, including reports of sexual abuse.

“These children were trafficked under the pretense of being taken for education but were subjected to horrific abuse. The government will ensure their full recovery and pursue the prosecution of those responsible for this heinous act,” the governor stated.
NAPTIP’s Commander in Kebbi State, Misbau Iyan Kaura, also shed light on the methods used by the traffickers, who would initially hide the children in Zamfara State before transporting them to Calabar. The final group of children was intercepted after the tip-off, and investigators confirmed cases of sexual abuse among the victims.
Kaura assured that the three arrested suspects would be prosecuted, and the agency would continue its efforts to dismantle child trafficking networks.
The rescued children are now receiving medical and psychological support to help them recover from the trauma, while authorities intensify their investigation to uncover other links in the trafficking chain.
This operation highlights the ongoing efforts of NAPTIP, DSS, and the Kebbi State government in tackling human trafficking and protecting vulnerable children from exploitation.
