Commodore Aiwuyor Adams-Aliu, spokesperson for the Nigerian Navy, revealed in a statement that multiple illegal refining sites were destroyed during the five-day operation, which is part of the broader Operation DELTA SANITY initiative aimed at curbing crude oil theft and illegal refining.

“On August 29, our operatives seized seven large Cotonou boats and two fibre boats operated by heavily armed oil thieves who were caught loading crude oil from an illegal loading point in the Botokiri area of Nembe Local Government Area,” Adams-Aliu said.

On August 31, six suspected oil thieves were arrested with the 109 sacks of illegally refined petroleum products in the Ogboinbiri-Kasama-Azama-Isoni area. By September 1, Navy operatives had confiscated two wooden boats and 328 sacks of illegally refined Automated Gas Oil at a riverbank in the Otuogori community, Yenagoa.

The operation culminated on September 2, when 35 more sacks of illegally refined petroleum products were seized in the Southern Ijaw Local Government Area, along with a wooden boat.

Commodore Adams-Aliu noted that the success of this operation highlights the Nigerian Navy’s commitment to eradicating crude oil theft and illegal refining in Nigeria’s maritime environment. The Navy will continue its intensified efforts under Operation DELTA SANITY to combat these illegal activities and protect the country’s oil production capacity.
