The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has praised the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for its conduct of the 2024 Edo State governorship election. According to the NBA’s Election Working Group (NBA-EWG), the election was generally orderly, with commendable performances from both INEC and security agencies.
On September 22, INEC declared Monday Okpebholo, candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), the winner of the Edo governorship election. Okpebholo secured 291,667 votes, defeating his closest rival, Asue Ighodalo of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), who garnered 247,274 votes.
In its report, signed by Bolatumi Animashaun, NBA-EWG team lead, and Mobolaji Ojibara, general secretary, the NBA noted that President Afam Osigwe deployed observers from five branches in Edo State to monitor the election. The NBA-EWG highlighted the professionalism of security personnel and the resilience of voters who braved inclement weather to exercise their civic rights.
“The turnout of physically challenged voters was particularly commendable, as they were prioritized at polling stations to ensure ease of voting,” the report noted.
However, the NBA expressed concerns over low voter turnout, vote buying, and logistical challenges, urging INEC to improve the timely distribution of election materials and to strengthen measures to prevent political parties from influencing voters through monetary incentives.
The NBA also emphasized the need for voter education campaigns to restore public trust in the electoral process, with a focus on encouraging greater participation, especially among women and youth.
