NDDC Begins N50,000 Monthly Payment to Empower 10,000 Niger Delta Youths

The Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) has launched the much-anticipated Youth Internship Scheme, providing N50,000 monthly stipends to 10,000 young beneficiaries across the Niger Delta region. This initiative, designed to equip young Nigerians with practical skills, marks a significant step toward youth empowerment and regional development.

Transforming Youths Through Practical Experience

The program is structured to last 12 months, during which selected youths will receive hands-on training in various organizations. This ensures they gain valuable work experience, making them more employable in Nigeria’s competitive job market.

According to Mrs. Seledi-Thompson-Wakama, the Director of Corporate Affairs at NDDC, the initiative is part of a broader effort to bridge the skills gap among Niger Delta youths. The selection process was highly competitive, with over 3.2 million applicants vying for just 10,000 slots.

“This unprecedented response highlights the immense potential of our youths and their determination to improve their future. We remain committed to ensuring that the most deserving candidates benefit from this life-changing opportunity,” she stated.

Data-Driven Youth Development

Beyond financial support, the program also serves as a strategic data collection initiative. The NDDC has compiled critical information on:

  • Educational qualifications
  • Skills and interests
  • Employment status
  • Challenges faced by Niger Delta youths

This data-driven approach will help the commission design future empowerment programs tailored to real needs.

Strategic Partnership with KPMG

To ensure transparency and efficiency, the NDDC partnered with KPMG, a global consultancy firm, to enhance its governance structure. This collaboration aims to transition NDDC from a transactional to a transformation-focused model, ensuring long-term impact.

“KPMG has developed a Governance Advisory Report that will guide our transition and ensure sustainable youth empowerment,” Thompson-Wakama added.

A Brighter Future for Niger Delta Youths

The NDDC Youth Internship Scheme is not just about monthly stipends—it’s a blueprint for long-term success. By providing young people with skills, experience, and financial support, the program is setting a new standard for youth empowerment in Nigeria.

With proper mentorship, industry exposure, and continued support, many of these 10,000 beneficiaries will transition from interns to full-time professionals, contributing to economic growth and innovation.

Final Thoughts

This initiative is a testament to the power of structured, transparent, and well-executed empowerment programs. As more organizations collaborate with the government, Nigeria’s youth will continue to gain access to opportunities that shape their future.

The NDDC Youth Internship Scheme is just the beginning. With the right policies and continuous support, Niger Delta youths can become the driving force of Nigeria’s economic transformation.
