The Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) has launched a transformative initiative by disbursing a monthly stipend of N50,000 to 10,000 indigenous youths. This Youths Internship Scheme is designed to empower young people through a 12-month, hands-on training program that places them in various organizations to acquire vital skills and experience.

A Bold Step Toward Youth Empowerment

In a press briefing held in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, Mrs. Seledi-Thompson-Wakama, the Director of Corporate Affairs at NDDC, announced that the stipend payments have officially commenced. The scheme, which began after a transparent selection process, attracted over 3.2 million registrants, demonstrating the immense desire among Niger Delta youths to better themselves.

โ€œThe unprecedented response reflects the aspirations of our youths, and our aim is to ensure that this life-changing opportunity reaches the most deserving candidates,โ€ said Mrs. Seledi-Thompson-Wakama.

Hands-On Training for Future Success

Selected participants will embark on a 12-month internship that provides practical experience across a range of industries. This real-world training is structured to help them develop critical skills that are essential for future employment and career growth. By integrating learning with work, the NDDCโ€™s program not only addresses unemployment but also paves the way for sustainable development in the Niger Delta.

Government Endorsement and Strategic Partnership

The Youths Internship Scheme follows the strong support of the Federal Government. Senate President Godswill Akpabio, during the schemeโ€™s inauguration on 31st July 2024, confirmed the government’s approval of the N50,000 monthly stipend. In addition, the NDDC has partnered with KPMGโ€”a renowned global audit and consultancy firmโ€”to strengthen its corporate governance framework. The insights from KPMGโ€™s Governance Advisory Report will help the commission transition from traditional, transaction-based operations to a model focused on transformation and long-term impact.

A Vision for the Future

This groundbreaking initiative is set to transform the socio-economic landscape of the Niger Delta. By investing in the potential of its youth, the NDDC is not only creating immediate employment opportunities but is also laying the foundation for future growth and innovation. The comprehensive data gatheredโ€”from participantsโ€™ qualifications to their career interestsโ€”will guide the development of tailored programs that address the region’s unique challenges.

As the program unfolds, its success is expected to serve as a model for similar youth empowerment initiatives nationwide. The NDDCโ€™s commitment to transparency, skill development, and strategic partnerships heralds a promising new era for the youths of the Niger Delta
