NDLEA Arrests 75-Year-Old Granny for Drug Dealing in Lagos

In a recent operation, the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) apprehended a 75-year-old grandmother, Sekinat Soremekun, on Friday, December 15, 2023, in the Oshodi area of Lagos. The arrest was made in connection with her involvement in dealing illicit drugs, with quantities of cannabis and liters of codeine syrup seized from her during the operation.

According to Femi Babafemi, the spokesperson for the NDLEA, Mrs. Soremekun confessed that her son, Segun, who is currently evading law enforcement, had supplied her with the illegal substances which she subsequently retailed. The elderly woman now faces legal consequences for her alleged involvement in the drug trade.

In a separate victory for the NDLEA, the agency successfully secured the forfeiture of a multi-million-naira mansion located at K-5A/2 Road 14, Victoria Garden City (VGC) estate, Lekki, Lagos. The property was reportedly used as a clandestine laboratory for the production of methamphetamine.

This achievement followed the prosecution of a drug baron, Okenwa Chris Nzewi, who, along with his associate Sunny Okeh Ukah, was arrested on July 30, 2022. The duo pleaded guilty on July 17, 2023, and were subsequently sentenced to four and three years imprisonment, respectively, with an option of fines. In addition, they were ordered to perform community service for four and three weeks, and Nzewi’s vehicle marked EKY 496 DJ was forfeited to the Federal Government.

To further prevent Nzewi from enjoying the proceeds of his criminal activity, the NDLEA initiated a civil forfeiture charge against the building used as a clandestine laboratory. The Federal High Court in Lagos initially granted an interim forfeiture order that expired on December 6, leading to the final forfeiture on December 7, 2023.

These developments underscore the NDLEA’s commitment to combating drug-related crimes and dismantling illicit operations within the country.
