The Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) has directed all accredited tertiary institutions across the country to begin updating and uploading student information on its official Student Verification Portal.

This latest directive is part of preparations for the opening of the 2025/2026 academic session education loan application window, which will allow eligible students across Nigerian universities, polytechnics, and colleges of education to apply for government-backed financial support.

The announcement was made on Thursday in a statement signed by Mrs. Oseyemi Oluwatuyi, the Director of Strategic Communications at NELFUND. She noted that the data upload exercise is necessary to ensure a smooth and transparent loan verification process before the portal opens for applications.

According to NELFUND, institutions are expected to capture and upload each student’s information accurately using verifiable details such as admission numbers and matriculation data.

The Fund emphasized that only students whose records are verified and uploaded by their schools will be eligible to apply for the upcoming academic year’s education loan. This is to prevent duplication, fraud, and delays in the disbursement process.

NELFUND further advised all tertiary institutions to designate responsible officers to oversee the exercise and ensure it complies with the technical guidelines provided by the agency.

In its statement, NELFUND reaffirmed its commitment to partnering with higher institutions to make quality education accessible to every qualified Nigerian student, noting that collaboration between the Fund and schools is crucial for the success of the national student loan program.

“This collaboration is essential to ensure that no qualified student is excluded as NELFUND prepares to open its loan application portal for the 2025/2026 academic session,” the statement added.

Institutions and students seeking assistance or clarification are encouraged to contact NELFUND through its official support channels.

The Fund’s ongoing reforms follow its earlier efforts to disburse upkeep allowances and process verification for thousands of students under the 2024/2025 loan cycle. The upcoming academic year is expected to mark a major expansion of the Education Loan Scheme, ensuring more Nigerian students have access to affordable higher education funding.
