The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has named Augustine Eguavoen as the interim coach of the Super Eagles, marking his fourth stint managing the national team. This decision follows the recent resignation of former coach Jose Peseiro due to the expiration of his contract.
Eguavoen previously took on the role of caretaker coach in June 2005, leading the team to a bronze medal at the 2006 Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt. However, he was dismissed from the position in April 2006. In June 2010, he was again appointed as caretaker manager, replacing Lars Lagerbäck, but he expressed no desire to apply for the permanent role.

Additionally, Eguavoen had a stint as the head coach of the Nigeria national under-23 football team in August 2010, with hopes of qualifying for the 2012 London Olympic Games. Unfortunately, the team was eliminated in the group stage, leading to his resignation in December 2011.
Eguavoen’s most recent appointment was on December 12, 2021, as the interim manager for the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations, following the departure of Gernot Rohr. After Nigeria’s elimination in the round of sixteen against Tunisia, he returned to his position as the Technical Director of the team.
