New Initiative Launched in Osogbo to Enhance Accountability Following Local Government Autonomy Ruling
An NGO has introduced a groundbreaking online platform aimed at promoting transparency in Osun State’s local governance. This initiative, unveiled during the ‘Osun Open Local Governments project’ town hall meeting in Osogbo, allows citizens to monitor the funds allocated to local governments.
The launch of this platform comes on the heels of a recent Supreme Court ruling that granted local governments autonomy. This ruling has sparked widespread calls for citizens to hold their local leaders accountable to ensure that the benefits of development reach all areas of the state.
During the town hall, stakeholders stressed the importance of public oversight to prevent any undermining of the federal government’s efforts. Rights activist Waheed Lawal urged the federal government to further empower local governments, while the ICPC commissioner in Osun State assured that there would be strict monitoring of local government expenditures to curb mismanagement.
As Osun State prepares for local government elections in February 2025, the Osun Open LG project is taking steps to educate citizens. Organizers have trained 62 volunteers who will travel across the state to raise awareness about the roles and responsibilities of local governments. This campaign will continue until December, aiming to foster greater civic engagement and accountability at the grassroots level.
