Niger Border Closure Affects Nigeria’s Economy – Senator Adamu Aliero

In a recent interview with Arise Television, Senator Adamu Aliero, representing Kebbi Central and a former governor of Kebbi State, raised concerns about the ongoing closure of the land border between Nigeria and the Republic of Niger. Senator Aliero expressed his dissatisfaction with the closure, asserting that it is causing significant damage to Nigeria’s economy.

Aliero, in his statement, deemed the border closure unnecessary and detrimental to the economic well-being of the nation. He urged authorities to reconsider and reverse the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) directive that led to the closure. The Senator highlighted the adverse consequences on the daily lives of citizens residing in communities along the border, emphasizing that these communities are bearing the brunt of the closure.

According to Aliero, over a thousand trucks loaded with goods from various countries are currently stranded at the border, leading to a logistical and economic bottleneck. Lawmakers from the affected northern states, including Aliero, have convened and collectively urged the federal government to reopen the border for business activities.

The Senator further pointed out the breach of agreements, citing the disruption of the dam-dredging project supplying electricity to Nigeria as an example. Aliero highlighted the disproportionate impact of the sanctions on ordinary citizens compared to the intended target, the military junta responsible for overthrowing Niger’s democratically elected president, Mohamed Bazoum.

Aliero underscored the inconsistency in the enforcement of ECOWAS sanctions, noting that other countries did not strictly adhere to the outlined measures concerning Niger. The closure and subsequent sanctions, as highlighted by Aliero, primarily have negative repercussions on innocent citizens rather than achieving the desired impact on the military junta.

It is crucial to recognize that ECOWAS imposed sanctions on Niger following the overthrow of President Mohamed Bazoum by rebel elite soldiers on July 26. Senator Aliero’s concerns shed light on the broader economic implications of these sanctions on Nigeria.
