Niger Workers: Gov. Bago Clarifies Dress Code Statement as Contextually Misunderstood

Niger State Governor Umaru Bago has clarified his recent statement on civil servants’ attire, retracting an earlier directive that generated controversy. In a viral video, Governor Bago had initially announced a prohibition on civil servants wearing traditional attires, specifically Kaftan and Babanriga, to work from Monday to Thursday.

The governor faced significant backlash following the announcement, prompting a clarification from his office. In a statement issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Bologi Ibrahim, Governor Bago explained that the video was both contextually misunderstood and mischievously edited to portray a different message.

Contrary to the perceived dress code imposition, the governor clarified that his intention was to encourage civil servants to engage in farming activities. According to the statement, Governor Bago believes that Niger State, with its vast agricultural potential, should not face economic challenges. He emphasized the importance of dressing smartly for farming, stating that his government is committed to an agricultural revolution and is already investing heavily in the sector.

“The governor’s statement did not in any way imply that civil servants now have a dress code to office from Monday to Thursday, as erroneously captured in the video making the rounds,” the statement read. “The governor did not announce or mandate any dress code for the civil servants; rather, he meant every professional should be dressed based on the demands of his or her job.”

Governor Bago attributed the misunderstanding to the misleading editing of the video, urging the public to disregard the clip and emphasizing that the full video provides a clear understanding of his intended message.

In light of this incident, the governor’s office advised social media influencers to exercise caution and ensure the accuracy of information before circulating it. The statement emphasized the importance of avoiding misrepresentations of facts to maintain a clear and transparent communication channel.
