In the wake of escalating tensions between Iran and Israel, the Federal Government of Nigeria has issued a plea for restraint from all parties involved. The recent exchange of attacks, initiated by Iran targeting Israeli territory in retaliation for an air strike, has raised concerns globally.

Nigeria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson, Francisca Omayuli, emphasized the importance of diplomatic efforts to ease tensions and prevent further escalation. Omayuli stated, “It behooves the two countries to reflect on the universal commitment to peaceful resolution of conflicts, for the advancement of global peace and security.”

World leaders, including those from the G7 nations, have also condemned Iran’s actions and called for de-escalation. Expressing full support for Israel, they underscored the urgency of ending the crisis in Gaza and urged for an immediate ceasefire.

While Israel and its allies intercepted the majority of the incoming projectiles, the fear of a potential Israeli counterstrike looms large. However, both the United States and President Joe Biden have reiterated support for Israel while urging caution and restraint.

As tensions continue to simmer, Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi cautioned against any reckless retaliation from Israel, warning of a decisive and stronger response.

The appeal for restraint from Nigeria comes at a crucial moment, as the international community navigates efforts to defuse the situation and prevent further escalation in the Middle East.
