Nigeria Could've Been on Fire if Supreme Court Had Sacked Gov Yusuf, Says Galadima

In a recent interview on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics, Buba Galadima, a prominent member of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), issued a stark warning about the potential consequences for Nigeria if the Supreme Court had decided to sack Governor Abba Yusuf of Kano State.

Galadima commended President Bola Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress (APC) for respecting the independence of the judiciary, despite his party’s involvement in the matter. He stated, “I am congratulating Mr. President for not interfering with the judiciary because Nigeria could have been on fire by now if what happened on Friday did not happen.”

The NNPP chieftain emphasized the gravity of the situation, highlighting the possible unrest and loss of confidence in the judiciary that could have ensued if the Supreme Court had ruled otherwise. He acknowledged the strength of character displayed by Tinubu in allowing the legal process to unfold without interference.

Galadima shed light on an alleged plan to forcefully take power from the NNPP in Kano, especially after the party’s victory over the APC in the previous elections. The recent Supreme Court decisions in Kano, Zamfara, and Plateau, where the tribunal and appellate court decisions were overturned, have been welcomed by opposition parties.

Before the judgment, Kano State experienced heightened tension, with political figures like Abdullahi Ganduje and Rabiu Kwankwaso playing significant roles. The electoral umpire initially declared NNPP’s Yusuf as the winner, but subsequent court decisions favored APC’s Gawuna, leading to demonstrations and violence in Kano.

Yusuf’s appeal to the Supreme Court reversed his earlier dismissal, declaring him the duly elected governor. This decision sparked widespread jubilation among NNPP supporters and Kwankwasiyya members in Kano.

The Supreme Court’s commitment to upholding justice in these cases has been crucial in maintaining peace and restoring confidence in the judiciary. Galadima’s warning serves as a reminder of the delicate balance between political stability and potential unrest in Nigeria.
