The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) Kebbi State Area Command has struck a major blow against smuggling, seizing contraband goods valued at N323 million and arresting five suspects. Customs Area Comptroller Iheanacho Ernest-Ojike shared these achievements during a press briefing in Birnin Kebbi. He explained that this success reflects the command’s strengthened efforts to curb illegal trade in the state.
The seized items include 367 bales of secondhand clothing, 16,300 liters of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), 74 cartons of unapproved medicaments, and eight bags of foreign parboiled rice. Among other confiscated goods were 180 pieces of donkey skin, two liters of oxidized nitric acid, and vehicles used to transport the contraband, such as a DAF truck and a Toyota Corolla.
According to Ernest-Ojike, the operation’s success was driven by the dedication of field officers, intelligence units, and support from local communities. Five suspects were apprehended and granted administrative bail pending further investigation, a move aligned with constitutional guidelines for lawful processing.

The duty-paid value of the seized items is N323,065,567, reflecting the Customs’ commitment to safeguarding Nigeria’s economy. Ernest-Ojike noted that some items would be transferred to relevant agencies. For example, the 180 pieces of donkey skin will be handed over to the Nigeria Agricultural Quarantine Services, while the 74 cartons of medicaments will go to the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) to protect public health.
Despite challenges like low import volumes through Kebbi’s Kamba border, the command generated N36.2 million in revenue last quarter. Ernest-Ojike emphasized that these seizures support the Customs Service’s policy of consolidation, innovation, and collaboration, a vision championed by Comptroller General Bashir Adewale-Adeniyi. The Kebbi command’s commitment to vigilance and collaboration continues to make an impact, helping to protect the economy and public welfare from the adverse effects of smuggling.
