Strategic Intelligence-Led Operations

The Operation Whirl Wind, responsible for customs activities in Kebbi and Sokoto states, has shifted its strategy to intelligence-led operations. Unlike traditional roadblocks or checkpoints, this approach focuses on gathering and analyzing intelligence to effectively intercept illegal contraband. Ejibunu highlighted that the team’s modus operandi is aimed at dismantling smuggling networks rather than merely capturing smuggled goods.

Significant Seizure in June 2024

In June 2024, the Operation Whirl Wind team successfully intercepted various smuggled items around the Kebbi and Sokoto border areas. The confiscated goods include 661 kegs and 15 drums of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), totaling 79,500 liters. These items have a Duty Paid Value (DPV) of N55,729,500, underscoring the economic impact of the seizure.

Broader Anti-Smuggling Efforts

Ejibunu also disclosed that similar operations were conducted in other regions, including Sokoto, Adamawa, Abeokuta, and Badagry in Ogun and Lagos states. These coordinated efforts are part of the broader agenda under Comptroller-General B. A. Adeniyi to combat smuggling across Nigeria’s borders. The success of these operations demonstrates the effectiveness of intelligence-driven strategies in curbing illegal activities.

A Stern Warning to Smugglers

During the briefing, Ejibunu issued a stern warning to smugglers, urging them to reconsider their illegal activities and transition to legitimate businesses. He emphasized that the Whirl Wind team would continue to pursue economic saboteurs relentlessly, ensuring there is no safe haven for smuggling activities in Kebbi, Sokoto, or any other state in the federation.

Conclusion

The interception of N55.7 million worth of smuggled items by the Nigeria Customs Service’s Operation Whirl Wind highlights the ongoing efforts to secure Nigeria’s borders and protect its economy. The success of this intelligence-led operation serves as a strong deterrent to smugglers and underscores the commitment of the NCS to maintaining the integrity of the nation’s trade regulations.
