Nigeria Invalidates Degrees from Cotonou, Benin, Togo, and Others, Orders Dismissal of Employees

In a decisive move to combat academic fraud, the Nigerian federal government has invalidated all degree certificates issued by Cotonou University, along with other institutions in Benin and Togo, from 2017 onwards. This action, announced by Minister of Education Tahir Mamman during a press conference in Abuja, also includes the immediate dismissal of employees holding such counterfeit credentials.

The government’s decision follows a comprehensive investigation that revealed a significant number of fraudulent certificates circulating within Nigeria. According to Mamman, the Federal Executive Council, led by President Bola Tinubu, endorsed this measure to uphold educational integrity and ensure that only qualified individuals are employed in both public and private sectors.

The investigation, spearheaded by a ministry committee, uncovered that many individuals had procured degrees from institutions not recognized by their respective countries’ educational authorities. Specifically, the committee identified approximately 21,684 fake certificates from Benin Republic and 1,105 from Togo, issued between 2019 and 2023. These findings led to the determination that many of these institutions were not authorized to confer degrees.

To enforce this policy, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation will issue a circular to all employers, both public and private, instructing them to verify the authenticity of academic credentials. The Head of Service will oversee compliance within the public sector, ensuring that employees with invalid degrees are promptly dismissed.

Minister Mamman emphasized the importance of this action, stating, “We cannot allow individuals with fraudulent qualifications to compete unfairly against our hardworking graduates.” He urged parents and students to verify the accreditation status of institutions before enrolling, highlighting the government’s commitment to maintaining high educational standards.

This move aims to eliminate disparities caused by counterfeit qualifications and reinforce the credibility of Nigeria’s educational system. By invalidating these degrees and taking decisive action against those holding them, the Nigerian government is sending a strong message against academic fraud and ensuring that qualifications are earned through genuine academic efforts.
