In a grim revelation that underscores the urgency of fire safety measures, Nigeria recorded the loss of 100 lives and properties worth a staggering N67.1 billion due to fire outbreaks in 2024. These figures were disclosed by the Controller General of the Federal Fire Service (FFS), Abdulganiyu Jaji, during a press briefing held in Abuja on Friday.
While the losses paint a harrowing picture, a closer look reveals a silver lining: the Federal Fire Service successfully saved properties worth an estimated N1.94 trillion and safeguarded 30,890 lives from potential destruction during various emergencies in the same year.
A Shocking Loss Amid Preventable Negligence
The detailed statistics shared by the FFS highlight the scale of the devastation. Over the course of 2024, 23 individuals tragically lost their lives to fire incidents, while negligence and non-compliance with safety regulations were identified as the primary culprits behind these outbreaks.
Controller General Jaji expressed his condolences to the affected families, stating, “As fellow Nigerians, we share in this grief and commiserate with the bereaved families and their loved ones.”
The harmattan season, with its dry winds and low humidity, further compounds the risk of fire outbreaks, prompting an urgent call for caution.
The Harmattan Factor: Amplifying Fire Risks
As Nigeria navigates the harmattan period, Jaji emphasized the heightened risk of fire-related disasters. “Currently, we are in the harmattan season when humidity is low, and the risk of static spark or gas explosion can spread rapidly. Fire is a delicate and dynamic force that requires us to be more cautious and vigilant,” he explained.
Jaji urged operators of fuel stations, petrol tankers, gas refilling plants, and individual gas cylinder users to adhere strictly to safety protocols. Non-compliance, he warned, could lead to avoidable disasters.
Future Plans: Leveraging Technology for Fire Safety in 2025
Looking ahead to 2025, the Federal Fire Service is determined to build on its efforts by leveraging technology to enhance fire safety and response times. Among the key initiatives announced are the deployment of the National Fire Detection and Alarm System and the Fire Alarm App, N-Alert.
“These tools will enhance our operational efficiency and ensure better service delivery,” Jaji said.
The FFS also plans to intensify public awareness campaigns, aiming to educate Nigerians about fire prevention measures and the importance of adhering to safety standards.
A Commitment to Public Trust and Safety
The Federal Fire Service remains unwavering in its mission to safeguard lives and properties across Nigeria. Jaji reassured the public of the agency’s dedication, stating, “We will continue to prioritise public trust and ensure that investments in fire safety yield commendable results.”
While the losses recorded in 2024 serve as a sobering reminder of the dangers posed by fire outbreaks, the Federal Fire Service’s proactive measures and commitment to innovation signal hope for a safer future.
