Why WhatsApp is Ending Support for Older Devices
Meta, WhatsApp’s parent company, periodically updates its app to enhance security, introduce new features, and improve performance. These updates often require more advanced operating systems (OS) to function. Devices running outdated software, like Android KitKat or older iOS versions, may no longer support WhatsApp effectively.
To keep the app secure and efficient, WhatsApp will stop functioning on specific devices starting January 1, 2025.
Affected Android Devices
If your phone runs on Android KitKat or an older OS and cannot be updated, WhatsApp will no longer work. Below is a list of Android phones known to lose support:
- Samsung: Galaxy S3, Galaxy Note 2, Galaxy Ace 3, Galaxy S4 Mini
- Motorola: Moto G (1st Gen), Razr HD, Moto E 2014
- HTC: One X, One X+, Desire 500, Desire 601
- LG: Optimus G, Nexus 4, G2 Mini, L90
- Sony: Xperia Z, Xperia SP, Xperia T, Xperia V
Users with these devices are encouraged to upgrade their phones or check if an OS update is available.

Affected iPhones in 2025
For iPhone users, the next round of updates will occur on May 5, 2025. WhatsApp will stop working on devices running iOS versions earlier than 15.1. Affected models include:
- iPhone 5s
- iPhone 6
- iPhone 6 Plus
While some iPhones may be updated to newer iOS versions, devices limited to iOS 12.5.7 will no longer support WhatsApp.
What You Can Do
To ensure continued access to WhatsApp:
- Update Your OS: Check if your device supports an OS update.
- Upgrade Your Phone: If updates are unavailable, consider switching to a newer model.
- Backup Your Data: Before transitioning to a new device, backup your chats and media via WhatsApp’s in-app settings.
Why This Matters
These updates not only enhance app security but also optimize WhatsApp’s performance. By focusing on newer devices, Meta ensures users experience the best features and improvements.
As technology evolves, apps like WhatsApp must phase out older device support to remain efficient and secure. If your phone is listed among those affected, take steps to upgrade and stay connected.
