Nigerian Actress Gets Six-Month Jail Term for Spraying and Stepping on Naira Notes

In a significant legal development, Nigerian actress Oluwadarasimi Omoseyin has been handed a six-month prison sentence for her involvement in an incident where she sprayed and stepped on new Naira notes during a social event in Lagos. The judgment, delivered by Justice Chukwujekwu Aneke of the Federal High Court in Ikoyi on February 1, 2024, follows Omoseyin’s initial plea of ‘not guilty’ to the charges presented by the Lagos Zonal Command of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

The charges, initially filed on February 13, 2023, accused Omoseyin of tampering with N100,000.00 issued by the Central Bank of Nigeria during a social occasion at Monarch Event Centre, Lekki, Lagos. The offense is contrary to and punishable under Section 21(1) of the Central Bank Act, 2007.

During the hearing on Thursday, Omoseyin changed her plea to ‘guilty’ in light of the compelling evidence against her. Subsequently, Justice Aneke pronounced a six-month prison sentence, effective immediately. Additionally, Omoseyin has the option to pay a fine of N300,000 into the consolidated revenue account of the federation.

This legal development has reignited discussions on the proper handling and respect for the national currency. The case parallels previous warnings issued by the National Orientation Agency (NOA) to individuals like the Olu of Owode Egba, Oba Aremo Sowemimo, who was cautioned for mishandling naira notes during a celebration. NOA Director General, Lanre Issa-Onilu, emphasized the potential legal consequences, including imprisonment and fines, for such actions.
