Nigerian Customs Seizes N24 Million Worth of Drugs at Kebbi Borders

The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has made a significant breakthrough in the fight against drug trafficking in the Northwest zone, intercepting drugs worth over N24 million at the Kangiwa and Bachaka borders in Kebbi State. The joint border patrol team, led by Comptroller Aminu Abubakar Danmusa, successfully apprehended the traffickers as they attempted to smuggle the illicit substances into the country.

According to Danmusa, the confiscated drugs include Cannabis Sativa (Indian Hemp) valued at N18,746,764 and 1,000 pieces of diazepam worth N5,743,187, bringing the total value to N24,489,951. The apprehension took place at the Bachaka and Kangiwa borders, located in the Argungu and Arewa local government areas of Kebbi State.

During the handover ceremony of the seized drugs to the Nigeria Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) in Birnin Kebbi, Danmusa highlighted the challenges faced by the NCS due to the geographic vulnerabilities of Kebbi borders. The proximity to Niger and Benin Republics, particularly the latter known for its drug activities, exacerbates the susceptibility of these borders to drug trafficking.

“Kebbi borders are particularly vulnerable because they border Niger and Benin Republics. As we know, the Benin Republic is notorious for drug activities,” Danmusa stated.

He underscored the detrimental impact of the drug trade on society and called for increased cooperation from border communities to effectively combat the menace.

Accepting the confiscated drugs on behalf of the NDLEA, Commander Suleman Usman of the Kebbi Command emphasized the national security implications of drug trafficking. Usman stressed that the pervasive issue of drug trafficking and its consequences affect all Nigerians and require urgent, concerted efforts to address.

The successful interception by the NCS and the subsequent transfer of the seized drugs to the NDLEA marks a critical step in the ongoing battle against drug trafficking in the region, underscoring the need for continued vigilance and community support in combating this pressing issue.
