In addition to the Cannabis indica, the Customs also intercepted significant quantities of Codeine syrup, tramadol, and other prohibited substances originating from India. This haul included 877 cartons of Barcadin cough syrup with codeine and 82 cartons of Really Extra Diclofenac Sodium tablets, amounting to approximately N964.3 million.
The Comptroller-General of Customs, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, emphasized the vigilance of the Customs Service in thwarting attempts to import harmful substances into the country. He noted that the seizures were evidence of the Service’s commitment to disrupting criminal activities that pose threats to national security and public health.

Adeniyi further highlighted ongoing investigations to apprehend the importers involved in the illegal trafficking. He warned that the Customs Service would continue to collaborate closely with national and international agencies to prevent the circulation of illicit goods and dismantle criminal networks responsible for such activities.
The misuse and abuse of these intercepted drugs, particularly Codeine and Cannabis indica, have profound implications for Nigerian society. Besides contributing to health crises such as addiction and mental health disorders, these substances fuel criminal activities and social instability.
The Customs Service assured the public of its dedication to protecting the nation’s economic stability and the well-being of its citizens. The recent seizures underscore the persistent challenges posed by organized smuggling networks, necessitating continued efforts to safeguard the country from such threats.
In conclusion, the Nigerian Customs Service urged Nigerians to support legitimate business activities while remaining vigilant against illicit practices. The interception of these drugs serves as a stark reminder of the dangers posed by illegal drug trafficking and the imperative to maintain robust enforcement measures.
