Nigerian Footballer Abubakar Lawal Dies in Uganda After Tragic Road Accident

Nigerian footballer Abubakar Lawal, who played for Uganda’s Vipers SC, has tragically passed away following a motorcycle accident on Entebbe Road in Kampala. The fatal incident occurred on Monday, February 24, 2025, while the 29-year-old was on his way to a club training session after escorting a friend to Entebbe Airport.

Lawal, a key player for Vipers SC, joined the Ugandan club in July 2022 from Rwanda’s AS Kigali. He played a vital role in their 2022/23 Uganda Premier League title-winning campaign and had featured in eight league matches this season.

Before his move to East Africa, Lawal had an impressive career in the Nigerian Premier League, representing teams such as Kano Pillars FC, Wikki Tourists FC, and Nasarawa United. His talent and dedication made him a respected figure in the football community.

Vipers SC confirmed his passing in an official statement, expressing their deep sorrow:

“We are deeply saddened by the sudden and untimely passing of our beloved player, Abubakar Lawal. His body has been taken to a medical facility for postmortem examination. Funeral arrangements will be communicated in due course. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family, club supporters, teammates, and loved ones during this difficult time.”
