Nigerian Military Hands Over 277 Rescued Boko Haram Captives to Borno State Government

In a significant development, the Nigerian military handed over 277 women and children rescued from Boko Haram terrorists in three local government areas of Borno State to the state government. This handover took place on Thursday at the Maimalari Cantonment in Maiduguri.

The Theatre Commander of ‘Operation Hadin Kai,’ Major General Shuaibu Waidi, represented by the Deputy Theatre Commander, Major General Ken Chigbu, formally handed over the rescued captives to the State’s Commissioner of Women Affairs and Social Development, Hajiya Zuwaira Gambo. The group, which comprised 128 women and 149 children, was rescued during military operations in Bama, Dikwa, and Monguno local government areas of the state.

Medical Checkups and Profiling

Upon arrival at the barracks, the rescued individuals underwent thorough medical checkups to assess their health conditions. This step ensured that any immediate medical needs were addressed before the victims were profiled. The military emphasized their humane approach, considering the rescued individuals as “brothers and sisters” who were forcibly abducted and kept in deplorable conditions by the insurgents.

Commendation and Support

Major General Chigbu praised the efforts of the Borno and Yobe State governments for their unwavering support to the Nigerian military in its ongoing fight against insurgency. This collaboration has been instrumental in achieving such significant rescues and ensuring the safety of affected individuals.

Rehabilitation and Reintegration

Hajiya Zuwaira Gambo, represented by a director in the ministry, Aisha Shettima, expressed profound gratitude to the Nigerian military for their relentless efforts in rescuing the victims. She outlined that the rescued women and children would be taken to the state’s rehabilitation centre in Bulunkutu. Here, they will receive psychosocial support and participate in various activities designed to aid their reintegration into society.

This handover marks another milestone in the ongoing battle against Boko Haram, highlighting the military’s commitment to safeguarding the lives and wellbeing of Nigerian citizens. The state government’s role in providing post-rescue support ensures that these individuals receive the necessary care and assistance to rebuild their lives.
