Pastor Tobi Adegboyega, a prominent Nigerian cleric and cousin of actor John Boyega, faces deportation from the United Kingdom after losing his appeal against the Home Office at an immigration tribunal. The tribunal ruled that Adegboyega, whose church was embroiled in allegations of financial misconduct involving £1.87 million, should be returned to Nigeria.
Investigative reports, including one by The Telegraph, exposed allegations of fraudulent activities within Adegboyega’s church. Former members accused the church of pressuring vulnerable young individuals, particularly from London’s Black community, to make significant financial contributions through loans, benefit fraud, and even selling blood.
The pastor had argued that deportation would violate his right to family life under the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR), citing his marriage to a British citizen and his contributions to community development. His legal team portrayed him as a dynamic leader who positively impacted hundreds of young people by steering them away from criminal activities.

However, the tribunal dismissed these arguments, pointing to findings from the Charity Commission, which identified prolonged mismanagement and misconduct within the church’s operations. The tribunal also criticized Adegboyega’s statements, describing them as exaggerated and implausible.
The panel concluded that the pastor’s deportation would not significantly harm his community work in the UK and that his family relationships, established during his unlawful stay, could be maintained from Nigeria. It deemed the Home Office’s decision to deny his leave to remain as lawful and proportionate.
Pastor Adegboyega reportedly entered the UK in 2005 on a visitor’s visa and overstayed, living unlawfully for years before applying for leave to remain in 2019. Despite his claims that the accusations against him were politically motivated and unsupported by criminal charges, the tribunal upheld the decision to deport him.
This ruling brings to a close a controversial chapter involving a pastor whose church’s financial practices and leadership style drew both acclaim and criticism in equal measure.
