Nigerian Police Arrest Couple for Buying One-Month-Old Baby for N30,000 in Anambra

In a commendable display of vigilance, the Nigeria Police Force, Anambra State Command, successfully rescued a one-month-old baby and apprehended a couple involved in the illicit act of buying the infant for the sum of N30,000. The arrest took place at Bridgehead in Onitsha on Sunday as the couple was en route from Lagos State.

The Anambra State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Tochukwu Ikenga, revealed in a statement on Tuesday that the arrest unfolded when a compassionate co-passenger in a luxury bus, owned by a popular transport company, noticed the baby’s distress. Despite the infant’s cries for food, the mother seemed unable to breastfeed.

Promptly, the concerned citizen contacted the Anambra Police Control Room hotline in Awka, leading to a coordinated effort to intercept the suspected bus. The police, displaying commendable dedication to duty, successfully apprehended the couple and the baby.

Upon questioning, the couple admitted to purchasing the child from its mother in Ajah, Lagos, for the sum of N30,000. The Commissioner of Police, Aderemi Adeoye, expressed gratitude to the alert citizen whose timely information facilitated the rescue of the child. He also commended the police operatives for their vigilance.

Commissioner Adeoye has directed that the apprehended couple be handed over to the National Agency for Prohibition in Trafficking of Persons (NAPTIP) for further investigation and prosecution. Meanwhile, the rescued baby has been placed under the care of the Ministry of Women Affairs, as directed by the State Government.

This incident underscores the importance of community vigilance in curbing illicit activities and protecting the most vulnerable members of society. The public is encouraged to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities to law enforcement agencies.
