In a recent announcement, the Nigerian Police have issued a stern warning to vehicle owners and drivers, stating that covering vehicle number plates is not only wrong but also considered a criminal offense. The Force spokesperson, Assistant Commissioner of Police Olumuyiwa Adejobi, emphasized the importance of keeping registered number plates visible at all times.
Adejobi took to his X handle (formerly known as Twitter) to communicate this directive, expressing concern over the common practice of covering number plates for no apparent reason. He stressed that such actions would no longer be tolerated, and law enforcement agencies are urged to enforce this regulation.

“It is a common thing to see many vehicle owners and drivers cover their number plates, for no reason. This is wrong and even criminal,” declared Adejobi, highlighting the compulsory nature of vehicle registration. He called for collective efforts to curb this practice, emphasizing that it encourages recklessness and crimes with impunity.
To enforce this directive, police operatives and personnel of traffic management agencies across the country have been instructed to go after violators. Adejobi emphasized the criminality of covering number plates and urged law enforcement to take decisive action against offenders.

Exceptions to this rule have been outlined, with “pennant officers” and heads of the three arms of government – executive, legislature, and judiciary – exempted from the directive. These officials are allowed to use pennants or flags on their official cars. However, the spokesperson clarified that after 6 p.m., the pennant must be lowered, and official vehicles’ number plates should be uncovered.
Adejobi further specified that flags on the officials’ vehicles must be covered with their registered number or seal of office when they are not inside the vehicle. This exemption is aimed at ensuring transparency and accountability among high-ranking government officials.
In conclusion, the Nigerian Police are determined to curb the practice of covering vehicle number plates, citing its criminal nature and the potential for encouraging unlawful activities. The directive is expected to be rigorously enforced, with law enforcement agencies directed to take immediate action against violators.
